2 Story Little Blue House Dickson Tn Fenced Yard

Haunted house preparations this year at fairgrounds as part of Smoke Fest.

SMOKE FEST / FAIR HAUNTED HOUSE

As part of the Smoke Fest, members of the Chamber of Commerce and the Fair Association have been creating a haunted house at the Dickson County Fairgrounds that caters to brave souls of all ages. The Haunted House will be split into sections with a "kid and toddler-friendly" portion and a more intense section for older folks.

The Haunted House is part of Smoke Fest activities — a Halloween-themed demolition derby will happen — on Friday night and throughout Saturday. The festival is a Kansas City Barbeque Society-sanctioned barbecue cook off.

The fairgrounds are located at 1053 Highway 47 E in Dickson.

YMCA / DRUG FREE COALITION HAUNTED HOUSE

The Drug Free Dickson Coalition and the Dickson County YMCA are hosting a haunted house 4-8 pm Friday at the YMCA in Dickson.

Cost is a donation of food or money to the Dickson County Help Center — however, neither is required.

The haunted house, which is part of the YMCA's Spook Fest, is in the back of the building. Organizers are suggesting 12 and older for the haunted house since "it's not geared to small kids." Among the features are black lights, strobe lights, chainsaws, hatchets, fog machines, headless people and some surprise guests.

The YMCA is located at 225 Henslee Drive in Dickson.

FRIGHT IN THE FURNACE

Cumberland Furnace is again home to the Fright in the Furnace, a tradition for the community that draws people from across Dickson County to the multi-room haunted.

This year's version is "The Reboot," which likely means more scares. The location is at the Cumberland Furnace Iron Lodge 503.

The haunted house is Friday and Saturday night "from dark until the screaming dies down."

Cost is $10 per adult and $5 for children under age 12. Proceeds go to charity.

The Iron Lodge is at 6400 Highway 48 North in Cumberland Furnace.

MONTGOMERY BELL STATE PARK

Dickson County's state park is hosting the popular Haunted Group Camp on Saturday night in which park cabins are decorated with Halloween themes and "haunted" by various characters handing out candy. Also at the event will be hay rides, story-telling, park programs and more. Cost is $5. Tickets can be purchased at the Montgomery Bell State Park office/visitors center.

The park is located off of Highway 70 between Dickson and White Bluff. The office is at 1020 Jackson Hill Road in Burns. Tickets are also available at White Bluff Care Car, 4302 Hwy. 70 and the Dickson County Chamber of Commerce, 119 Hwy 70, Dickson.

HAUNTING ON THE HILL

Dickson County High School will be host to the Haunting on the Hill 5-8 p.m. Monday with all proceeds going to the Dickson County Help Center. Admission is $1 or a canned food item per person. "Haunted Hallway" will cost an additional $1 per person. Other activities: Games, basketball, Halloween movies, story time, photo booth, face painting, hay rides, concessions and much more.

The school is located at 509 Henslee Drive in Dickson.

BOO FEST

Though not a haunted house, the event is popular and draws costume-clad children and adults to Main Street in Downtown Dickson 5-6 p.m. Saturday. In addition to trick-or-treating at various downtown businesses, the event hosts a costume contest and parade.

HALLOWEEN SAFETY TIPS

And, as a bonus, here are trick-or-treating tips from Dickson Police Officer David Cole:

The City of Dickson does not set a particular day for Halloween. Halloween is typically held on Oct. 31 each year. This year that falls on a Monday. Since Halloween falls on a Monday this year, there will be lots of happenings on both Friday and Saturday nights this year.

Are you planning on trick or treating? If so, here are some common sense safety tips to keep you and yours safe:

*Cross the streets at corners using traffic signals and crosswalks. Make sure that driver's see you before you step out in front of them.

*Wear bright or reflective clothing so drivers can see you better.

*Don't walk around looking at your cell phone. The bright light from phone will cause night blindness and make it harder for you to see once you look up.

*Always watch for cars and don't walk in roadway. Drivers have a much more difficult time seeing at night.

*Look left, right and then left again before crossing the road.

*Use face paint instead of a mask to keep from obstructing a child's view.

*Keep a flashlight handy. Actually, take 2. Two flashlights are always better than one.

*Only go to neighborhoods that you trust.

*Only go to the homes that are lit up and look welcoming.

*Parents; go with your child. Don't leave them out there alone.

*If you are around train tracks…stay off of them. Remember that a train has the right of way and can't stop on a dime.

*Stay on sidewalks and out of roadways.

*Don't eat candy that appears to have been tampered with.

*Do not vandalize anything. Vandalism is a crime.

*Do not let strangers talk you into going into their homes.

*Drivers … please use extra caution while driving around. A lot of folks will be out and about.
